What Does It Cost To Live In Your Neighborhood?

The above image is from the Center For Neighborhood Technology’s website and is based on data that was used to create a document commissioned by the City of Fort Wayne under Graham Richard entitled “RECONNECTING FORT WAYNE: Building a Sustainable Future on an Innovative Past“.

The Housing and Transportation Affordability Index shown above is quite useful in seeing which areas of Fort Wayne are most affordable based not only on housing price but transportation cost as well.

Make sure to click the “Advanced” theme in the upper left portion of the page to see a wide variety of parameters.

One of the interesting results is that the downtown area between Calhoun and Broadway has a lower transportation cost than anywhere else in the entire county of Allen, as shown (zoomed in on the city) below.

Not surprising is the fact that areas on the outlying edges of the city are expensive to live in not only because of housing but also because of the cost of transportation, which will only continue to rise.

So much for “drive until you qualify” as a method for securing affordable housing.

Looking at the data, it seems the phrase should mean to drive in, not out.
