“The sounds of polka, the smell of bratwurst and sauerkraut and the allure of sampling German beer — nothing says summertime in Fort Wayne quite like the beginning of Germanfest.
The 27th festival starts this weekend with a celebration of events from Sunday through June 8.”

“For adventurous types looking to jump right into some festival action, there is now the Trauben Tromp. Visitors can sign up in teams of three to participate in an authentic grape stomp at the Headwaters Park festival plaza at 6 p.m. June 7. A total of nine teams will compete against the clock for prizes to determine who’s got what it takes to produce the most juice.
Also on June 7, families can look forward to fun activities during Familienfest at Headwaters Park. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors can take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, have faces painted and see balloon sculpting. There will be demonstrations and juggling by the Fort Wayne Juggling Club and a performance by magician Jim Barron. Kids can learn to speak German at the event’s Kinder Korner.
The festival provides opportunities to learn more about local German culture. Local historian Jim Sack will give a lecture at 2 p.m. Sunday at The History Center, 302 E. Berry St., on the influence of Germans on the development of Fort Wayne.
Another notable event features Kris Kallmeyer, German teacher at Northrop High School and two-time Fulbright exchange teacher to Germany, who will present an hour lecture with slides about Berlin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Center, 233 W. Main St.”
