Monday: Lincoln Museum Closes, North River Deadline
Monday June 30th will be an interesting day in the Fort.
The Lincoln Museum, near the intersection of Clinton and Berry in downtown Fort Wayne, will close to the public.
Citizens may want to visit the museum one last time before the doors close at 5 PM on Monday. Admission is free.
Monday is also the deadline for a decision on the North River land near the intersection of Clinton and 4th Street.
Where one door is closing, another may be opening. Whether we should move through that other door is a question for the community at large.
Some things to consider about North River as the deadline draws near:
- The property is currently privately owned by the Rifkin family and is taxable
- The estimated purchase price by the City is $4.3 million
- Donation of the land has been thrown out as an option
- Ownership by the City would make the property non-taxable
- The land requires environmental cleanup. It is unknown how much is required, as the environmental study has been shielded because of ongoing negotiations
To what extent should the North River concept (view final report) be pursued?
