Honestly, this is a really stupid name.
Atlanta owners, using an Atlanta advertising firm, decide it’s best to play to the Hoosier bumpkin stereotype- barefoot and stupid, walking through the woods with a pot on our head and a pocket full of seeds. Wouldn’t “the Hayseeds” have been more blunt?
A co-worker pointed out. That’s a pot on the head. Yep… the Fort Wayne PotHeads. What the heck were they thinking?
Mark, I think it was a joint effort between the owners and the Wizards brass on the deciding of the new name.
If you guys look around though, there are a LOT of dumb names throughout Minor League baseball…Lansing Lugnuts, Great Lakes Loons, Cedar Rapids Kernels. Some other ones I saw: Asheville Tourists, Mongomery Biscuits, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Winston-Salem Warthogs, Toledo Mud Hens. So I bet there have been thousands of people around the nation who have had the same reaction we are having right now.
BUT, I didn’t even think of the Pot Heads reference. UGGGHHH. That is what is going to make us the laughingstock of minor league baseball. I can’t believe nobody in the Wizards organization or ownership noticed that.
I think they should have taken the top ten names in their minds and had the residents of fort wayne take a vote on it. This has to be the worst team name I have ever heard of!!!

Uhhhhhhhh the TIN CAPS? And that logo? You are KIDDING me, right? In all of my experience with minor league sports, this is without questions one of the most stupid names I have EVER seen. I mean, it’s so bad that it’s funny—you can’t help not to laugh about it. :-)
Ron, I don’t think leaving this up to the citizens of FW would be such a good idea either. Remember it was the citizens who voted for Fort Wayne”Mad Ants”, over the other options for the basketball team.
They actually pulled this one off well.
You know I was skeptical with what name they would come up with that surrounding an entire community and our lore and our history. I even had my own favorite “Summit City Sandbaggers”. but I have to admit, “I am impressed!”.
The Fort Wayne Tin Caps it is!
Now where did I put my spoon to bang my pot or my lid to cover it?
And you do have to admit that the slight reference to Pot Heads is funny as hell to.

The Mad Ants management had already selected the name prior to the “voting.” That’s straight from Jeff Johnson, VP of Sales & Marketing.
I imagine that by now you people who have made this very poor decision in the name ‘Tin Caps’ will have the common sense to change the name. The new park will be great and deserves a better mascot logo and team name. Try this: Fort Wayne Johnny’s – Fort Wayne Ground Hogs. These ideas could result in cool looking mascots and logos.
I think it a cool name. It shows something about our history.
