A Portent Of Cycling To Come

A Portent Of Cycling To Come

Outline of new bike lane on West Wayne Street at Harrison

Now how about replacing one of those car parking spots with a corral for bikes?

The lane by itself tells cyclists to move on through. A place to lock up says it’s okay to stay.

Complete the circuit.

  1. Now I don’t know Fort Wayne too well but I wonder if there have been any talk about making this street into a two-street. In its current configuration I wonder if cars zip down it, which will deter bicycle use even with the lanes… Just 2 cents from Milwaukee:)

  2. Dave, the idea has been proposed and discussed and it met with a lot of opposition. A lot of Fort Wayne’s long-time residents react to any kind of change with wide-eyed terror and immediately start to visualize worst-case scenarios; everything that might possibly go wrong becomes a very real disaster in their imaginations. New ideas have to be introduced to them in very small increments. The current proposal to make Calhoun Street two-way is stirring quite a lot of resistance, just as making it one-way did in the ’80s when the transit mall was created.

Many cities are reverting one-way streets to two-way, and in most cases it has worked well; it calms the traffic, reducing noise and making downtowns more friendly to pedestrians and cyclists while actually making navigation easier for drivers, especially visitors who may not be familiar with the street layout.

  3. @Robert I’m amazed how cities face exactly the same problems, and change really has to happen the same way i.e. incrementally.
